Contain Yourselves!

A friend invited me the grand opening/30th Anniversary celebration for The Container Store last night. And since Be is out of town on business I decided to tag along. I didn't know what to expect and I really didn't know what the event was for until my guest and I showed up at my friends place. That's when we learned it was all the way in Plano which is about 40 minutes from where I live and that they were expecting over 3,000 people. We get there at 7 p.m. and we see this:

It was at an actual store. Nice/Fancy? That is not the place I would have a party if I was celebrating my 30th anniversary but no big deal, it wasn't my decision. Other than the fact that it was at their store it turned out to be a nice evening. The food was amazing! They had little food stations set up throughout the store and the best part of it all is that they used items from the store to serve the food. So the caterers were walking around with a picture frame as their serving platter and we were eating out of things that you can actually find at the store. For example, they had Asian food and we ate that out of these take out boxes, soup was served in glass jars and dessert was served in clear amac boxes. I thought that was very creative and unique and a great way to get people to notice your products.

They even had a great live band and dance floor...and what's worse is that people were actually attempting to dance.

It was funny. There were more cougars than you could shake a stick at and they were all flirting with the young cute caterer boys.

It was fun but after a while we got a little bored. So we decided to practise our "I don't care" and "I am bored" looks like the bitchy queens we are. So we stood around for a good while trying to show my friend how to pull those looks off. Unfortunately there were other bitchy queens there that have the look down to a science. As we were walking past a group of them they gave us the I don't care and I am bored look in a combination and threw in sound effects. I must master that combination. Since we were beaten at our own game we decided to window shop and I found some pretty good deals. When was the last time you were at The Container Store? It's been at least a year for me and I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. Are you ready? It's not just containers! I found some great pet necessities like this pet travel container and this pet food scoop both of which I am going back to buy. I also found this tea storage box I am considering getting. And look at this bungee chair! It is so comfortable, especially after stuffing my face with all the food that passed my way.

Once we got bored with window shopping we found this great little device.

It lets you practise your fisting technique! See it's more than just containers.

New Look...Same Blog

I have updated the blog layout. Just a little cosmetic change.

I have also added some other blogs I read. Take a minute and explore other blogs you may like.

Does anyone have anything interesting to report? Anything?

Work is really slow right now. We all have to take our vacations by the end of this month or we loose the time that we accumulated so everyone is out of the office and as a result we are completely bored out of our minds.

I would take time off but I don't have any left. So if you have a blog I need you to update. If you don't have a blog I need you to leave a comment and entertain me.

Sincerely,

Me

Slut

Every so often I check the stats on my page. Not because I have a lot of readers just because I am curious and I am always surprised what keywords people use to get to my blog. Someone found my blog by looking up Slutty Confessions. Maybe I should write about my slutty confessions more often to give them a reason to come back.

Freakishly Big

My sister mentioned that my right leg looked swollen after I came back with bloody and bruised legs from the tubing trip. I didn't think anything about it, I was putting ice on it, neosporin, and I was taking really good care of it because I HATE scars. I guess this is also a confession. I hate scars on my body but I think scars on other people can be sexy. Anyway, back to the original post.

So yesterday I was at the gym and I was working out my calf's when I noticed that my right calf is freakishly big when you compare it to my left one. It bothered me so much that I went directly to the mirror and started to compare my legs, I am sure everyone at the gym thought I was a freak but I had a problem on my hands (or legs). Later that night, after a few cocktails and a bottle of wine B and I were sitting on the couch and I bolt up and stand directly in front of the t.v. to have B inspect my legs. After he confirmed that my right one is abnormally big we break out the measuring tape and start taking measurements.

After many attempts the measuring tape confirmed what our eyes saw, my calf is huge! So from now on I will only be working out my left calf.

Make me feel better and tell me about your body parts that are abnormally big.

Gay Pride

It's Gay Pride Month here in the U.S. and my b/f works for a gay organization so he has to travel to different pride events around the country every weekend. It's not fun for him because most of the places he visits have been really hot (temperature wise) and he has to be outside in the heat talking to people. So he doesn't really enjoy it.

He has to go to Houston Pride next weekend. Two friends and I decided to drive down there for the weekend and enjoy pride. I went with B to Houston pride last year and I "volunteered" to help him. By volunteer, I mean I had to help him because the guy that went with him decided he was "sick" so I went and helped out. It was hot, humid, and raining and we had a big argument. It wasn't fun for either of us.

This year I am not planning on helping unless something really bad happens and all of his volunteers don't show up. But as of now, I am planning an hanging out with my friends and enjoy the festivities.

If you were dating me, would it bother you that I was there having a good time while you were worked your ass off?

Have you been to a pride event? Did you enjoy it?

The Scream

So I promised I would post a picture of B and here it is!

While my mother was in town I made flour tortillas and one of them ended up looking like the face from the painting The Scream.

I thought about putting it on Ebay but before I could save it B ended up eating it.

Tease

My home computer is trying to torture me and it's not letting me use the internet so I won't be making any post this weekend.

I will be posting a picture of my boyfriend B on Monday so stay tuned.

Never judge a book by it's cover

I was at the gym during lunch today and while working out a guy that is always there with who I thought was his lover comes over and asks about the big band-aid on my leg. The band-aid is covering up the big gash that I picked up while tubing. We make small talk and I learn that the guy who he works out with is straight and married with kids (no one would have ever guessed that), we went to the same school for our MBA, and he is a pharmacist.

Later he comes back as I am doing hammer curls and says:

Him: I forgot to tell you something really funny.
Me: (concerned about what it could be) Oh yea, what's that?
Him: I always see you coming in with your work clothes and I pegged you as a pharmacist. I thought 'he must work over at CVS'.
Me: (Laugh) No, I sure don't.

As he walks away I make a mental note: Start Dressing Better!

Self Portrait

Taken at my sisters house. They have a pond in their yard that has turned red and green. It's some sort of algea that they are trying to control but the algea is winning.

Algea 1 - G Family 0

Kate

The return of Kate the transgender cat. I was at my sisters house yesterday where I ran into Kate my sisters cat. They thought it was a female cat so they named her Kate. When they found out she was a he they started to call her Tiger but unfortunately the name Kate stuck. So this is Kate the Transgender cat.

Mom

I know I need to post about tubing but I have another brief post. And besides, we haven’t uploaded the pictures yet so it will have to wait another few days.

So my mom has been staying with B and I this week. I picked her up on Monday and I took Tuesday off to spend with her. We really didn’t do much other than shopping and lots of cooking. It was nice just hanging out with my mom. Every time she comes into town she always makes me my favorite food. Chile con Carne and hand made flour tortillas. It’s the best comfort food and she makes me enough to last me a few weeks. Thank god for freezers.

Mom has been sleeping in our room and B and I have been sleeping in a blow up mattress in the living room. It hasn’t been comfortable but it’s been nice.

But that’s not really what I wanted to post about. Yes it’s been nice having my mom around and I enjoy spending time with her but I wanted to post about how comfortable she has gotten with the whole gay thing. She has been very supportive and has made a real effort to make B feel comfortable. The day we picked her up she gave him a little gift that she gave all of the son-in-laws and on Monday she gave him a little something also. It’s the little things, you know? I don’t need her to be a PFLAG mom or anything like that. I just want her to love me. And she does…and she always has. I never doubted it but it’s nice to see that she (along with the rest of my family) accepts me for who I am and who I choose to share my life with.

Anyway, I don’t really have the words to express how I feel but I wanted to share something. I think I am very lucky to have the family that I have.

Tubing Weekend

This is a short post so I can share the pictures below. I will make a more detailed post with more pictures later.

The weekend was a lot of fun. We drove down to the river in South TX. We stopped at Sam's on the way out there to pick up groceries. There were a total of 14 people, 4 gay guys and 10 lesbians, and after 45 minutes at Sam's we came out with 3 cards of groceries and 10 cases of beer.

It looks like a lot of food but we were there for 3 nights and 4 days. So it was just enough.

Thank God lesbians travel with rope and bungee cords or we would have never made it with all the food packed behind a trailer.

We ran out of beer on the second day so we had to go to the local grocery store and pick up 5 more cases.

I came back with a bit of a tan, 4 lbs heavier, with some bloody and bruised legs, and a few new friends.

Hot and Naked

I am sitting on my couch naked and very hot. My a/c went out last night around 1 a.m. and I am waiting on the repair man to come over and get it back up and running. Its 92 degrees right now and I am HOT!

I have a headache, I am hungry, and I am sweaty. I won't be able to take this much longer so they better get here soon or I may pass out.

Family Guy

B and I were watching Family Guy last night.

Me: Brian (the dog) is fat.
B: He is a dog.
Me: He is still fat.

He is still my favorite character though because he drinks.

Good News!

I went to the AT&T store and they were able to extract my contacts from my old phone to my new phone.

Everything is good with the world again. We now returned to your normally scheduled program.

Random

I know I said I was going to post more often but I really don't have anything to talk about. Sad but true.

B is going to be out of town for most of the month of June so I will be single but not in the lets go out and get drunk, naked, and sleep with anyone you want single. Just the I am lonely single.

I got a new phone yesterday. I don't have any one's numbers in the new phone though. I have to go get the numbers transferred at the wireless store.

That's about it.

What's going on with you?

Weekend Update

I haven’t posted in a few days…blame the weekend…the alcohol…or the pool parties. So here is a quick update of the weekend:

On Friday B and I took a friend to dinner and to the movies. We watched Indiana Jones; I haven’t seen any of the other ones so I thought it was good. The people I was with said the first one was better but I don’t have anything to judge it against.

On Saturday we went to a birthday party at a friend’s house and we played in the pool. We also tried the Wii Fit and Guitar Hero. Playing guitar and drums is hard, I totally sucked at it but I would try it again. The Wii fit is not as exciting as I thought it would be but it’s still fun. Saturday night we went out to the bars with some friends and the bars were dead. I would have figured the bars would be busy since it was a holiday day weekend. I was wrong.

On Sunday we went to a bbq at a friend’s house and then we all headed out to the bars. And guess what? They were dead again. What is wrong with people these days? It’s a holiday weekend, go out and enjoy it.

On Monday, we slept in late since we were running on very few hours of sleep and then we went to Lowes to pick up some stuff we needed. Later in the day we went to a neighbor’s house for a bbq and to the neighborhood pool were we played water volleyball against a couple of cute guys and a few bitchy girls.

That’s it. As much time as I spent in the water you would think I would have had a tan by now but no luck. I am thinking of joining a tanning service.

Ball Sweat

Scene: Bar with lots of gay men, cigarette smoke and dance music playing in the background.

Guy 1: Do i smell good? (puts wrist to guy 2's nose)
Guy 2: What is that? (As he wrinkles his nose and gives guy 1 a look of disgust)
Guy 1: Ball sweat! (As he walks away)

Bad Boys

Guy 1: How are things with Mark going?
Guy 2: I am not sure. He texted and I replied but I never heard back from him. I called and left him a message but he never called back.
Guy 1: It's probably for the best. He looks like a sleaze ball.
Guy 2: I don't know why I am attracted to him. I just can't help it.
Guy 1: It's probably the bad boy in him.
(Long Pause)
Guy 2: Is it possible for an interior designer to be a bad boy?

A sign of the times

We went to a little gathering last night and out of 7 people, 3 had been recently been laid-off, 1 had recently started a new job after being laid-off, 2 were looking for jobs because of uncertainties with their job, and the other still had a stable job.

What is wrong with that picture?

Tuesday, May 20, 2008

I started working out with B yesterday. He is trying out my gym for a week so that we can work out together and it's the best workout I have done in a long time. He pushed me and made me do a lot heavier weights that I would have done on my own. As a result, I am sore but it feels good. We are going to continue working out all week and when it's time to change the workout I will go to his gym for a week.

It's nice to have someone to talk to while we work out but the workout took twice as long as normal. I don't like that. I like to get in and get out. I am not one who goes to the gym to socialize, if you want to talk to me give me a call or send me an email. When I go tot he gym I wear my ipod and ignore everyone around me. I am sure people thing I am rude...but I don't enjoy being there so I just want to get it over with. It's like torture...but hopefully you get good results.

We are doing a whole body workout but I want to concentrate on my arms and chest. I want to have a nice chest so that I can wear v-neck shirts. Don't judge me...you know you are vain too!

I should do the before and after pictures to get the full effect of the changes.

Home is where the Mom is!

My mom is in town for a month long visit. She is staying with all of us for at least a few days so it will be nice to spend time with her.

B and I picked her up from the airport on Saturday and we spent the rest of the day visiting family and eating...and eating...and eating. It was fun.

Yesterday, I decided to go visit mom after work so I took off for the hour long drive to my brothers house where they were cooking chile con carne and hand made flour tortillas. Chile con carne is like the American chili stew but 1,000 times better. It has a much better flavor and you can eat it with hand made tortillas...nothing is better than that.

When i got there my mom was the only one there so I helped her make tortillas until everyone else got there and I was kicked out of the kitchen and laughed at my tortillas because they were not round. They were basically every shape but round. OH well, they tasted good.

After all the eating I made the trip back home where I immediately went to sleep. I woke up this morning and I am still stuffed.

What reminds you of home?

YOU ARE ALL SAYING THE SAME THING!

Meetings at my hell hole are horrible. Everyone talks over each other and everyone wants to be the alpha male/female so they have to get their point across no matter what.

I just got out of a meeting that should have taken 30 minutes at the most but instead took almost an hour and a half. Everyone talks all over each other so you can't hear anything anyone says. If someone is speaking someone else chimes in with something completely unrelated so nothing ever gets accomplished. After something has been decided someone wants to make changes.

After a while I had to say "THE FORMAT HAS BEEN DECIDED, MOVE ON" and "YOU ARE ALL SAYING THE SAME THING!" and yes I did raise my voice. You have to raise your voice if you want to be heard.

I hate meetings.

Tell me about your meetings. Are they better than mine? Do people pay attention?

5K

I ran another 5K yesterday. I ran my first 5K in March as part of my
running class. After my first 5K I said I wanted to improve my time to run an 8 minute mile and I did it but I didn't meat the goal I had set up for myself. I wanted to run the whole thing in 25 minutes and I ended up running it in 25 minutes and 18 seconds. Had I pushed myself a little harder I could have done it in under 25 minutes.

My goal for next time is to run it in under 23 minutes.

I am not sure if I have mentioned this or not but I am training for a half-marathon. My first one is going to be in November and the second one is going to be in December.

I will definitely need cheerleaders for that one!

California Gay Marriage Ban Overturned

The California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage and there is already a petition out there to amend the state Constitution to ban gay marriage.

How do you feel about it? How would you vote if this was up for a vote in your state or country?

Guilty as Charged!

Once upon a time. No, I mean. I once dated a guy who was a writer. I wrote about it here, here, and here and probably in many other places.

I admit it. I wasn't the nicest guy. When we broke up I probably handled it wrong and I a still being reminded.

We spoke today for the first time in along time. The conversation went like this:

Writer Guy: Oh, you'll be pleased to know the men here are worth writing about.
Me: That's great. That should give you plenty of writing material.
Writer Guy: I am writing about my trial and errors with lovers and I am calling it "Traded". You should start thinking about who will play you in the film.

I probably deserve those jabs. I can be an ass at times.

Tell me about your worst break up? Where you the bad guy/girl?

Baby Mama

We saw the movie Baby Mama this weekend. It’s not the type of movie I would normally watch but a friend wanted to see it and he had been asking for a few weeks for us to go with him and his partner. We bought our tickets on line and invited a few other people and when it came down to it, the friend who really wanted to go see it never showed up. Apparently he overslept or something.

The movie was hilarious. It’s all predictable but you still have a good time laughing at their silly antics. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler are both amazingly good. It also has a lot of good actors like Sigourney Weaver and Steve Martin. Normally, I don’t enjoy movies with Steve Martin because he seems to be a bit to over-the-top but it was a much toned down version of his normal acting.

Anyway, the story line is this: Successful unmarried woman (Tina Fey) puts her career before family, now she wants to have a baby. Woman tries adoption and to get pregnant but she cant so she turns to an agency that finds surrogate mothers (owned by Sigourney Weaver) and she is matched with Amy Poehler’s character. The surrogate lies about being pregnant so she can continue getting checks, she breaks up with her boyfriend and movies in with her…funny scenes follow. I won’t ruin the end just in case you want to watch it.

Sit Bitch! Sit!

We just got back from dog training classes. We figured it would be good for Lucy to get some basic training. After trying to do the most basic of commands she refused to do it and as a result got labeled as stubborn.

She refused to sit. Sit. The most basic things all dogs should know how to do.

Oh, and she also stole the treats from the instructor. That little thieve.

I am going to practise the command sit with her. Maybe she will be able to master it by next time we go for training.

Sit Bitch! Sit!

Tell me about yourself.

If you haven't noticed, I have been blogging a lot more lately. I think I am back...full time.

So I want to know about you, all 3 of my readers. Who is reading the blog? How did you find my blog? Do you have a blog? If so, what's your blog address?

Just wondering who is out there. Come on. Don't be shy.

Things from the Past

I am taking a box home from work today. I plan on sitting down in front of my cd rack and packing up my cd's. Two reasons really, one, I don't have room for them and two, I haven't used a cd in many, many years.

I am debating if I am just going to store them or if I am going to sell them at one of those second hand cd stores.

Is there anything we use right now that you think might become obsolete in the future?

Overheard at a Thai Restaurant

I went to lunch with my co-workers on Friday to a Thai restaurant.

There were two ladies sitting at the table next to us:

Lady 1: Do you want some spring rolls?
Lady 2: Are those the crunchy ones?
Lady 1: No, those are the ones with the rice paper.
Lady 2: No, I don't like those. They remind me of condoms.

How dare you interupt my training!

I conduct a training course for two of my co-workers every other Tuesday. It's a welcome to our business 101 and I do it out of the kindness of my heart (cough).

Right as we are getting ready to start one of them dials in and says "C, I am not going to be able to make it today. I am about to leave work and go to the hospital."

And me, being the senstive guy that I am said "Can't you tough it out? It's only for an hour."

Nobody thought it was funny.

Dilemma!

A good friend went out on Sunday night and met a guy. The guy is a guy I somewhat know from a previous encounter. Back when I was single I met him out and we were flirting etc. And his friend came over and asked about his boyfriend. In other words, he is a cheating, lying, ho bag.

Should I tell my friend?

Honestly, I don’t really know that much about this guy besides that.

Yellow Pages Goes Green!

If you haven't already done so, go to Yellow Pages Goes Green and submit your address to be removed from receiving unsolicited Yellow Pages.

Who uses the yellow pages anyway? Most people who use the internet are savvy enough to know how to look up any information they need via the internet or they are familiar with google's free text service that provides you an address and a phone number for what you are looking for.

So why do we continue to receive Yellow Pages? If you are like me, you either throw them away or recycle them as soon as you receive the. Why not save yourself a step and sign up to stop receiving them all together?

Pass on the information to as many people as possible and maybe we can save a tree or a forrest.

Overprotective parents or hippies

Someone I know went to his niece’s birthday party and he was telling me about it. The child is 2 years old and the parents did not allow the child to have candy on her own birthday.

The cake was made out of sugarless frosting.

The piñata had small toys inside instead of candy. And the biggest thing of all is that they were not allowing the kids to hit the piñata of Elmo. Instead, the piñata had strings and each child got a chance to pull a string. One of those strings was connected to Elmo’s back and when they pulled it the toys inside fell out.

I don’t have any kids but this seems rather strange to me. First off, no sugar? Are you serious? Then the piñata. Seriously?

Over protective parents or hippies? You be the judge.

Indulge my while I brag a little.

We ran for 45 minutes yesterday! That is the most we have ever run since we started our running program. I was ready to give up after 30 minutes because I wore the wrong pair of shoes but if I had two options 1. Stop running and walk back to the car which would take me about 30 minutes or 2. Keep running and make it back to the car in 15. I choose to run. At the end of the run I could have kept going for another 15 minutes but we were trying not to over do it since we have to run hills tomorrow and I will need all my strength for that.

If you ever think about picking up running make sure you visit a running store that sells running shoes. I am not talking about your local Foot Locker or shoe store inside a mall; I am talking about a running store where you can pick up everything from your shoes to your clothes. When we first started running I was wearing my old pair of Nike’s, they were cute and stylish but definitely not made for running. After a couple of weeks I kept getting chin splits and a pain on the right side of my knee. After visiting the running store where we do our running program they fitted me (by fitting I mean they made me run, with shoes, barefoot, walk and measured my foot) for shoes and determined that I needed different shoes. I know what you are thinking…SUCKER they are going to sell you the most expensive shoes they’ve got! And I thought that too but I paid about $100 for my first pair of shoes.

I took them home and I ran in them for about 2 weeks but I was still having problems. So I returned the shoes and I was fitted again. This time I paid $69 for a new pair of shoes and my pain went away. I got a pair of Asics and I love these shoes. If they are a good shoe store and not out to make a quick buck, they won’t try to up sell you and will get you the right pair of shoes, no matter how much they cost.

I later went back and got a pair of Nike Zoom Elite because of a sale they were having. I paid about $48 for the shoe. Great price but not a great shoe for my foot. This is the shoe I wore on my run yesterdays and if your foot goes numb…It’s not a good thing. The right socks also make a big difference. I like these Nike Elite Structure socks. They hold your foot together and have the dri-fit technology that takes the moisture away from your skin which keeps your feet from getting all sweaty as you run.

This post was not meant to be advertising for Nike. But I do like most of their products, especially Nike+. This product works with your iPod and it keeps track of how far you run, your pace, speed, etc. You insert one piece of the gadget in your shoes and the other one gets attached to your iPod. It also communicates with you and tells you how you are doing. Which is great for a little added motivation. I don’t have one of these so I can’t say how well it works but I would love to have one and try it out. They are not that expensive, I believe they are about $30 but you need an iPod nano which is where I run into a problem. I have an iPod video and I am not willing to buy another one just for a gadget.

So the moral of this story is to get fitted for shoes and go out for a run or a walk. It will make you feel so much better.

Daddy and Jack

Meet Daddy and Jack. Jack is the one on it's belly and Daddy is the dominant one standing over Jack. These are the crawfish we adopted at the fish fry this past weekend.

Unfortunately we had to set them free. They were not looking very good so we decided to set them free in their natural habitat. This picture is of them trying to make a run for it and get back into the dirty water of some creek.

I use to like it when Daddy would crab on to my finger with its sharp little pinchers and make me bleed. Oh, the good times we shared. They will be missed.

My Boyfriend has a Date

My boyfriend has a date this weekend. Yes, you read that right. He has a date this weekend. I didn't believe it either and I am pissed about it.

He is going to a work event in Houston and he is taking a transgender woman as his date. I know I don't have boobs but come one...

So I have decided to have a date this weekend also. Reichen and his HOT HOT HOT underwear model boyfriend Ryan Barry are going to be in town for an event. Maybe I can get Ryan to fall in love with me and take me on a date.

I think its only fair that I get to date Ryan while B is going out on his date

Crawfish, Cougars and Drunks. Oh My!

It was an exciting weekend. Saturday I woke up at 6 a.m. to go to meet up with my running group where we worked on running up and down hills. It was exhausting but so much fun!

I then took the dog to the dog park and the farmers market. I also went with a friend to check out a loft he is thinking about renting. It’s in an old flower mill and they have used the old parts of the mill as decorations through out the building. The one he is getting has a fire door on one of the walls and a stairwell bolted on the ceiling.

Later that night B and I met up with a friend for drinks in Plano, one of the suburbs, where we were surrounded by Cougars. It was an interesting mix of people with a lot of older people but a good mix of young people. We kept looking at the Cougars and the men that want them as they went in for the kill.

Our friend’s neighbor was also there; by the time we got there he was drunk. So drunk that he kept asking us the same questions over and over again. At first it was funny but after a while it was annoying.

Sunday we were invited to celebrate a friend’s boyfriend’s birthday. He is from Louisiana and had a fish fry to celebrate his birthday. There was lots of gumbo, salmon, shrimp and crawfish. B and I had never had crawfish before so they showed us how to crack them and get the meat out. Some people also suck the heads but that was to nasty for us. So we just ate one and decided crawfish were not for us. They taste very earthy and it’s a lot of work to eat especially when you only have get about ½ an inch of meat from each crawfish.

At the party there was also a drunk, drunk, drunk lady who kept spilling on herself and falling over. Apparently she doesn’t get out often and was taking this opportunity to act a fool. She was talking on the side and the rest of us were talking and she tells me I am stupid for interrupting her. Mind you that she is drunk and has no clue what she is talking about so all I say is “you are drunk”. I am not big on confrontation, especially when someone is drunk and no matter what you tell them they will take it as confrontational so she was quitted down by one of her friends and later come by and gave me a hug when she was leaving. If you are going to act a fool you might as well just stay home. Here you are ruining someone’s birthday party and all because you can’t handle your liquor. The rest of us had a good time though, and she was taken home soon after.

B and I also picked up two new pets this weekend. There was a sack of crawfish lying on the floor and a lot of them were trying to escape their fates by clawing their way out of the mesh sack and hiding in the vegetation around them. B and I decided to save them form their deaths and ended up taking two of them home in a cup us as our new pets. We named them Jack and Daddy (there is a restaurant in seafood restaurant in the area called Daddy Jack’s). After researching what they eat we think we can keep them alive. We are going to get a fish bowl and some rocks keep them together. I will have to post pictures of Daddy and Jack once we get them their new home.

Phone Etiquette

Why do people pick up the phone when they can't talk and say "I'll call you right back."?

Why not let the call go to voice mail?

I am back!

I am back from Seattle and I have tons of pictures and stories to share.
I will probably post later this week or on the weekend.

Blogging is hard!

I use to blog a lot before I got into a relationship. I blogged about my adventures in the dating world, the fun events I got to go to, and other random stuff. Now that I am in a relationship, it seems to be getting harder to find things to blog about without writing about our relationship.

I am going to have to start making up stories to keep me entertained.

Why I Hate NetFlix!

I use to belong to Blockbuster online but I wasn't happy when they increased their prices and then, for good measure, increased their prices again.

So I switched to NetFlix around December of 2007. After a 3 month trial I am canceling my subscription with Netflix because they are way to slow to deliver movies. If I send a movie back on a Monday, I won't receive another movie back until Thursday or Friday. That is 4 days of WAITING. I am not a very patient person, and I realize that, but 4 days is a long time. With Blockbuster, I use to get a movie back within a day or two. Now that is speed!

So after 4 complaints to Netflix and not an acknowledgement from Netflix that they had received my complaint, I have decided to cancel the subscription.

I don't think it's to much to expect a little customer service and a fast delivery time.

First 5K

Today I ran my first 5K! It was great and I am so proud I finished.

Sure I have done other 5K's before but this is the first time I have ran the whole thing. And I wasn't even tired at the end, I could have gone on a few more miles.

We have another 5K in a few weeks so I hope to improve my time in that race. I ran a 9 minute mile and I would like to improve that to an 8 minute mile for the next run.

Eventually, I would like to run a 6 minute mile.

Quick Update about the interview

IT SUCKED!

No, it really did!

Lots of issues listed below:

1. I didn't have anything to wear. It seems I have gained weight and all of my shirts are to small around the collar so I had a hard time finding a shirt to wear. SO I queened out and B had to bring me back down to earth.

2. I didn't sleep very well. I kept waking up every hour and checking the clock. I was very tired this morning...thank god for eye cream.

3. I got to the airport at 7 a.m. (which means I got up at 5:30).

4. Nobody knew what to do with me, I had to go through security twice because I had to go back and get my boarding pass (not my fault...theirs).

5. We changed gates 3 times. I lost my phone in one of those gate changes. Luckily someone turned it in and I found it.

6. Flight was late.

7. When I got there I couldn't get a cab to take me to where I needed to go. I asked 5 different ones and they all said NO. ASSHOLES! I had to call a cab to come and get me. Apparently, if they leave the airport they can't come back for 3 hours and since I was going such a short distance they didn't want to take me.

8. The interview didn't go well. I think one of the ladies liked me and the other didn't. Not a big deal. Not sure I would want to work there. I need to do more research. I will know more if I go to the second round in 2 weeks.

On a good note, I was able to take an earlier flight back home. I had to run to the gate and I barely got on.

So now I am home and I am about to take a nap.

Have a good weekend!

The Ski is Falling

Or it feels like it anyway.

There are people around here who are creating issues or making issues bigger than what they really are. Mostly because they are afraid of loosing their jobs but it's also their nature.

There are also people kissing way to much ass around here. There is a lady that works here that is totally annoying. When they announced they had fired my bosses, bosses boss and our VP was appointed the interim person, she immediately asked should we start sucking up now? The next day she brought in bagels and has been in his office more than usual.

She annoys me. She is a know-it-all and she never shuts up. EVER.

Anyway, do your co-workers annoy you?

Things are Changing

Things are changing around here. My bosses, boss, boss was "let go" and now our department is under review. I have the feeling there are is going to be a 50% cut in staff to try to save cost around here. I wasn't to worried the first couple of days but not that everyone around me is panicking I am starting to panic as well.

That is all everyone seems to talk about in my department these days. And it doesn't matter what you are talking about, the subject always pops up. It's so tense here that people have started packing up their belongings and asking the copy center to copy certain materials they created, training manuals, etc.

And everyone seems to be working hard. Normally we all show up late but since all of this happened everyone is at their desk by 8 and leaves at 5 or after 5. I on the other hand came in late today. I had a tough night and couldn't sleep. But I have been on time every day this week…which is rare for me.

As far as packing, I don't really have anything here that I want to take with me. The only thing is a calendar that I use from Shigeki's Christmas mail out, my hand lotion, and my flash drive. Everything else that is here they can keep. I have never really personalized my work areas. I never put up photos or decorate so I don't have to box anything up.

I was talking to two ladies in my department who have been here for 5 years (which is rare, our turn over rate is over 50%), one of them use to be in HR and was telling horror stories of people who had been fired and either had guns in their bags or came back and sat in the parking lot waiting for their boss who fired them to come out. CRAZY

Anyway, we were making plans to go to Chicago in May but those plans will have to be postponed until we know what's going on around here.

On a happier note: This is my 500 Post!

Do you Twit?

I just joined Twitter. I thought twice about joining because it would just be another site to remember about updating but the beauty of this site is that you can update using your phone or your messenger.

So what is Twitter? According to the site:

Twitter is a service for friends, family, and co–workers to communicate and stay connected through the exchange of quick, frequent answers to one simple question: What are you doing?

So I am on Twitter. Let me know if you are on it or if you join.

Steroids, Pains and St Patricks Day!

Are you wondering what they all have in common? Well, nothing really. But I will be talking about all 3 in today's post.

First off, Happy St. Patricks Day everyone! Did you drink your share of green beer this weekend? B, a friend of ours, and I went to a huge block party where we got pushed, shoved, stepped on, and spilled on about a thousand times in about a thirty minute period. We got in touch with another friend and ended up going to a house party where he was a few blocks away. After that party we went to another house party where they had a dj, more kegs that I could count, and lots of drunk boys and girls having a good time.

Sunday we went to another St. Patricks day party that wasn't as fun as the ones on Sunday but it was nice to run into old friends and annoying acquaintances.

Steroids or testicles? what's next?

Lets go with steroids. I don't remember if I have mentioned that I hurt my self and I am to lazy to pull up the old post. I pulled a groin muscle, hurt my hip, hurt both arms, and broke a toe. Yes, I have been racking up the medical bills and the weight since I have not been working out. I went to the doctor last week and he put me on steroids to help with my hip. I also spoke with my running coach and he gave me these great hip exercises that help out a lot. I feel better already.

And don't worry, the steroids are only for 5 days and it is not enough to give me roid rage or give me muscles a'la Hulk.

Racism or Hurt Feelings?

This story came out today about Hillary Clinton rejecting and denouncing the support of Adelfa Callejo, a lawyer in Dallas who has been involved in politics for some time. I have already expressed that I am voting for Obama but I am glad Hillary rejected Ms. Callejo's support. Simply to express to Ms. Callejo that racism is not acceptable int he world we live in today.

Ms. Callejo had this to say about Obama
Obama simply has the problem that he happens to be Black … When Blacks had the numbers, they didn't do anything to support us. They always used our numbers to fulfill their goals and objectives, but they never really supported us, and there's a lot of hard feelings about that. I don't think we're going to get over it anytime soon.

She goes on to say

When Blacks had the numbers, they didn't do anything to support us," said Callejo. "They always used our numbers to fulfill their goals and objectives, but they never really supported us, and there's a lot of hard feelings about that. I don't think we're going to get over it anytime soon.

Do you believe her feelings are hurt because of the tense relationship between the Africa American and Latino communities or do you believe she is being racist?

If you use the "She is from a different generation" excuse, at what point are we going to stop using that excuse and start calling people for what they are?

I have had this conversation with two of my good friends many times. They both happen to be black and we all agree that this is more prevalent in the older communities and we don't really see the tense relationships in the younger communities. I am completely aware this may not be the case in other cities but based on our social circles we don't see this tension.

So Racism or Hurt Feelings? Discuss.

Down Hill

They say that once you turn 30 things start going down hill.

If you believe everything you read then I should expect to loose my sex drive as well as my metabolism...among other things.

I am not sure about all of that but I do know things are going down hill...and fast.

Three weeks ago I hurt my arms and I wasn't able to lower them all the way down. I was forced to walk with my arms by my chest for about a week. Not very attractive.

Last week I pulled a groin muscle and I was in pain. So much pain that I was heavily drugged for a couple of days. I wasn't able to jog through all this, the pain was to much. There was one night were I wasn't able to sleep but then in the morning the pain was completely gone. It was a miracle.

I am ready for 31, maybe it will be better then.

Addictions

I am addicted to blogs.

Not my blog, other peoples blogs. I check my Google Reader all day long.

I have over 60 subscriptions. They are all categorized by the type of blog they are or by region (Gay, Art, Finance, Dallas, etc).

Today, I decided to cut back on my blog addiction and I started to delete some blogs. The first to go was Perez Hilton. I don't really need to know what's going on in the lives of celebrities. Next I will delete blogs I don't really want to read anymore...I hope to have my list down to 30 by the end of the day. If I leave comments on your blog I won't be deleting yours, I enjoy it to much to delete.

Wish me luck! Maybe now I can do something productive with my time.

Valentines Survey

I still haven't decided what to get B for Valentines but I have two ideas that he might like. I am not sure on one of them which is why I want to ask.

My two ideas are

1. A sushi 101 class at Central Market. We get to make sushi and eat it ourselves. We also learn how to make it.

OR

2. Passport. We are taking two vacations this year, one of which he definitely needs a passport and the other is not completely planned but he may need it. He doesn't have it so I can pay for the passport.

I am not sure about idea number 2. Which idea do you think is better?

Surprise...Part 2

So here is the second part of the surprise I wrote about HERE. When I got home after the gym, B met me at the door and behind him on the kitchen table were 2 dozen roses. At first glance I thought they were just roses but when I got close to them each of the roses has a piece of ribbon tied to them with a piece of paper. Each rose had a reason why he loves me. Things like:

I love the way you make me laugh
I love your caring for others
I love your touch
I love your kindness
I love the way you hold me when we sleep

And my favorite....you ready?

I love the way you speak your mind.

Isn't that sweet?

NYC

These pictures where taken in July when B and I went to NYC

Lent or Lentils?

I am not a religious person but I have decided to give up fried food and to try to eat healthy during Lent. Several reasons really, one of them is that I am a lot heavier than I was about a year ago. And since I am now running I can acually loose the weight if I eat healthier.

So lent...here I come.

The Person Within Me

My camera phone broke so I am trying to send myself as many of the pictures as possible before my camera totally gives out. I will be posting some of my favorites on here.

I really liked this painting. It's not very clear but if you look closely you can see a person on the face.

I took this picture from a magazine while I was waiting to see my doctor.

Heavy Duty!

I took this picture when my brother and I were trying to fix the sewage problem on the rental property I own. It took us all day but we were finally able to get if fixed.

It was in the middle of winter so it was cold and wet. It wasn't a lot of fun.

Obama for President

I am still voting for Obama and I am very excited to find out the results of Super Tuesday. I haven't been this excited about a presidential race in a lon...actually ever.

I was reading this article from LA Weekly that i thought I would share with the rest of the world. I am glad to see everyone in the gay community hasn't fallen behind the Clinton's and there are still people out there who are supporting Obama.

I still can't bring myself to vote for Clinton. For the reasons mentioned in my previous post and I think she is just negative.

So enjoy the article titled Obama's Gay Gold Mine by clicking on the link or you can read it below:

Obama's Gay Gold Mine
A new breed of power broker is staking out the White House. Their names are Bernard and Gifford

By PATRICK RANGE MCDONALD
Wednesday, January 30, 2008 - 5:58 pm
Jeremy Bernard thinks he has been sucked into a time warp. Only five months ago, he was sitting shoulder to shoulder with U.S. Senator Barack Obama in the back of a black SUV, speeding through West Hollywood on Santa Monica Boulevard, talking about the fine points of gay and lesbian federal legislation. An hour later, the Democratic presidential candidate was hitting every detail they had discussed in the car, but this time on network television. For Bernard, it was mind-blowing. The key fund-raiser for the Obama campaign was seeing his issues dramatically migrate from a personal chat to the national stage.

But now, two days before the Nevada Democratic caucus on January 19, Bernard is stuck inside the Caramel Lounge at the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, attending a gay social mixer disguised as a political event. Jean Smart, the blond actress from the 1980s TV show Designing Women, begs the three dozen or so gays in the room to vote for U.S. Senator John Edwards.

"He's made it be known that he's not comfortable with gay marriage," she tells the boys, "but he's such a great leader, and he's very passionate."

Bernard stands there, staring at Smart and grinding his teeth. The Human Rights Campaign, one of the most high-profile gay-rights groups in the country and host of the mixer, has invited celebrities to pitch their favorite candidates. No star shows up to back Hillary Clinton, but an actress from Grey's Anatomy is there for Obama. Bernard sees it as amateur hour — an insulting and embarrassing reminder of the old guard, or Old Gay, approach to politics.

Straight celebrities to woo the gay vote in 2008? It's as if time had suddenly reverted back to 1992, when Bernard worked on Bill Clinton's presidential campaign. Everything was so different during the other Clinton's run. It was nothing like today, with candidates talking about same-sex marriage and truly ending the ban on gays serving in the military. Just to be publicly recognized and embraced by an Arkansas governor soon to be president was cause enough for celebration. But now the political landscape had changed. All of the Democratic candidates sought the queer vote, and maybe more importantly, gays are a source of millions of dollars in campaign contributions.

It's going through Bernard's mind that these things mean power and influence, and gays need to deliver their vote to build upon that power and influence — not waste time on the Strip 48 hours before the Nevada caucus listening to an actress.

Then Edwards' campaign manager takes the floor in the low light of the Caramel Lounge. Naturally, the well-connected Bernard knows him — former Congressman David Bonior of Michigan. Now things seem to be going somewhere. Someone substantive has finally shown on the scene.

Bernard, a compact and young-looking man in his early 40s, stands at full attention, waiting to hear the official word from the serious political flank in the Edwards camp. "That's why the Equality Rights Campaign is so important," Bonior says, getting the name of the organization embarrassingly wrong. Bernard looks around the room to see if other people heard what he heard. No one reacts. A few moments later, Bonior says "Equality Rights Campaign" again. Bernard can't believe it, and neither can a few other people. Even if few voters have heard of the HRC, to active gays, it's like seeing a top political consultant of the 1970s or '80s mangle the name of the vanquished Equal Rights Amendment pushed by women's groups of that era. Someone yells out, "Human Rights Campaign!" Bonior apologizes, but it's weird. Not the political depth Bernard expected from Edwards' people. More amateur hour.

Then Bonior flubs it again. He declares that John Edwards isn't for "that Ryan White military thing." What? Bernard is angry but also insulted. Other people are muttering. What's this guy talking about? Ryan White? That's federal AIDS funding. We certainly hope you're in favor of that. And the military thing? That's got nothing to do with young AIDS victim Ryan White, who died in 1990 and had been befriended by Elton John. The military thing is "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," former Congressman Bonior. You know, the "thing" that's been used to discharge tens of thousands of gays from the military over the past 15 years? Maybe you should take a seat before you embarrass yourself further — which Bonior soon does, but not before saying "Equality Rights Campaign" for the third time.

Bernard is visibly grinding his teeth again. But in another part of the room, his lover and business partner, Rufus Gifford, sits at the bar, talking to Hollywood überagent Ari Emanuel over an iPhone and ignoring the bumbling Bonior and the celebrity speakers. Gifford is focused entirely on setting up another big-money, high-profile fund-raiser for Obama before the February 5 primary in California and 21 other states.

The actress Kate Walsh, formerly of Grey's Anatomy, now delivers a shaky pitch for Obama at the invitation of the Human Rights Campaign. Gifford and Bernard have much more pressing business, specifically the "pot of gold," as Bernard likes to describe money-rich Southern California, that could bring another cash infusion into the Obama campaign. The pair are top-notch fund-raisers, after all. It's why the senator from Illinois hired them.

During this long and bare-knuckled presidential-primary season, a campaign will get nowhere without very big money. And next to New York City, Southern California — more precisely, the Westside of Los Angeles — is the land cash-hungry politicians never ignore. But only a handful of people in this town have the contacts and relationships to deliver the big checks. It's an elite world, and one that Jeremy Bernard and Rufus Gifford are capable of dominating.

"Even if you have a great candidate and a great message," says Mitchell Schwartz, Obama's California political director, "people who are underfunded don't win."

So with Hillary Clinton's powerful political machine pounding away at the Obama campaign, with each primary costing more and more money to fend off the attacks through television and radio ads, and with the need to send out Obama's own message leading up to Super Duper Tuesday, Bernard and Gifford are pivotal players in his continuing survival and hoped-for nomination as the Democratic candidate for president.

"If you don't have the money to campaign in all of these states [on February 5]," says Schwartz, "then you're not competitive. Period."

Bernard and Gifford understand their make-or-break roles. It's the prime reason they went into fund-raising. Gay issues are central to their own political agendas, and they know from years of experience that money gives them unique and up-close access to power. They have the luxury, after climbing to the top, of throwing their deep-pocketed connections only behind candidates who closely match their politics. "We work for candidates who we ourselves would be willing to give money to," says Gifford.

Once the checks are rolling in, Bernard and Gifford then have the full attention of a congressional or presidential candidate, giving them the chance, behind the scenes, to promote their own political issues. It's a level of access gays once only dreamed of, but they are living it.

"Being gay makes you inherently political," says Gifford, comfortable with using his proximity to power to influence the candidate. "You see what's right and what's wrong, and you need to do something about it."

Bernard and Gifford have very little, if anything, in common with the Old Gay approach typified by the Human Rights Campaign's need for straight actresses to peddle an agenda. They are the new guard, or New Gays, who are more politically savvy. The New Gays cultivate, work with and fund gay political candidates. They withhold their talents and money from straight politicians who don't follow through on their promises, while supporting those with what they view as a progay track record.

And they never seek the straight world's approval for their own gay existence. The New Gays understand their power in today's political system, and they use it. And in this winter's slog of primaries, they just might use it to propel a candidate toward the White House.

The word came the day of the Iowa Democratic caucus on January 3. U.S. Senator Barack Obama had won the state in a hard-fought upset over Hillary Clinton, and the national campaign manager in Chicago, David Plouffe, wanted Bernard and Gifford to throw a big-money fund-raiser in Los Angeles. They were given two weeks to pull it together.

A week later, a Friday, Bernard and Gifford are working the final details with their two-person staff in a second-floor suite at the Northrop Grumman building in Century City. Bernard, dressed in tan khakis, black loafers and a royal-blue Brooks Brothers shirt, sits in a black chair at his glass-topped desk and squints at the screen of a MacBook Pro laptop, tapping his feet incessantly.

The "event," as Bernard calls it, is generating enormous interest among Los Angeles' moneyed elite.

"So where are we now?" Bernard asks Gifford, who walks into the room.

"380," answers Gifford, referring to the number of guests.

"Whoa!" Bernard says excitedly.

Gifford smiles and takes a seat at his own glass-topped desk with his Mac, poking at the laptop. He looks like he could be one of Mitt Romney's sons and wears tan khakis, an off-white Oxford shirt and brown penny loafers.

"I think I should write an e-mail and tell the co-hosts we're sold out," Gifford says to Bernard. He sounds happy.

Despite Obama's loss in New Hampshire, these money men have already exceeded their goal of raising $500,000 and are fast approaching $700,000. The event will unfold at the Pacific Palisades home of David and Marianna Fisher, where Obama will give a speech to people like musician Randy Newman, actor Bill Paxton, Hollywood heavyweight Mike Medavoy, Soul Train's Don Cornelius and other wealthy and powerful supporters. "It's easily the fastest sellout we've had," Gifford tells Bernard.

Already, they expect 450 guests, giving the maximum contribution of $2,300 a pop. So many requests are still pouring in for the January 16 event that Bernard and Gifford glide easily into serial fund-raising mode and begin planning another event to be held after the Democratic debate in Los Angeles on January 31.

Like many savvy political operatives playing at the national level, Bernard and Gifford never thought that a presidential campaign would need to raise at least $100 million, but that's the record level this bruising multicandidate fight has reached — and the campaign consultants for Obama back in Chicago expect large checks from Southern California. So far, Bernard and Gifford have out-raised the other regions of the Obama campaign three out of the last four quarters, with Los Angeles events they organized for DreamWorks and Oprah Winfrey bringing in nearly $5 million.

In a massive primary like February 5, with some of the biggest media markets in the world to reach, including not just California but New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Massachusetts, the race between Obama and Clinton could come down to having the money to woo the millions of "soft voters" who polls show have settled on a candidate but could still change their minds.

Rufus Gifford stands in the driveway outside the Fishers' multiwinged, contemporary mansion on the night of the big event. He's dressed in a navy pinstriped suit with a red tie and watches the guests stroll toward him. Obama hasn't arrived.

"Do you need anything?" Gifford asks a woman in a long brown dress.

"Oh, no, dear, I'm fine."

Bernard, dressed in a black suit with a yellow tie, walks around inside, telling jokes and shaking hands with people as they eat minicheeseburgers and sip red wine. Bernard and Gifford know how to work a room, people like them.

Gifford now walks inside and spots Bernard. He tells him everything looks okay, and they crunch the new numbers. They figure some 600 guests, bringing in at least $850,000. The guys look at each other and smile — it's going to be a lucrative evening.

An hour or so later, Barack Obama, dressed in a dark suit, makes his way through the glass doors that lead to the backyard. It looks like a rainforest, lit up like a movie set. Hundreds of people surround Obama as he stands on a little stage covered with black AstroTurf. Mike Medavoy is looking up at him, a foot away. Bill Paxton stands behind the presidential candidate. Dick Zanuck, the Republican movie producer who told Gifford he has never before contributed to a Democrat, flanks Obama's right. The senator goes into his speech of hope and changing America and tells the crowd, "Running against the Clintons ain't no cup of tea."

Bernard and Gifford stand inside and watch the scene from the kitchen. It's the kind of night they signed up for a year ago, when they decided to work for Obama. Hillary Clinton's campaign offered them a job too, and for more money, but Bernard and Gifford just couldn't see themselves raising the big bucks for a candidate who they felt was largely running on Bill Clinton's presidential record, which wasn't always good to gays. "The only way I could honestly sell her to people would be to say she's going to win," says Bernard. "What's the point of that? When we started our company, we wanted to pick only candidates we would be enthusiastic about. Obama was that candidate. He absolutely has the best record on gay and lesbian issues."

On February 1, 2007, Bernard and Gifford went to work, but the campaign infrastructure for Obama in California was sketchy. "There was nothing," Bernard says. Veteran political operative Mitchell Schwartz, for example — who has worked for Barbara Boxer, Bill Clinton and Gray Davis, among others — wasn't hired as the California political director until August. With the help of a few other true believers, Bernard and Gifford took on the added duties of advance men, political strategists — and even Obama's bodyguards, when he came to California during those first six months.

It wasn't an entirely bad situation, at least for the two guys. Few handlers were attached to Obama at that point, so whenever he came into town, Bernard could get coveted face time with the candidate. He could also schedule impromptu meetings, like the one between Obama and several gay leaders from Los Angeles at the W Hotel in Westwood. "They talked about their concerns with Barack," says Bernard.

Bernard also set up a crucial meeting between Los Angeles City Council President Eric Garcetti and Obama. "It was a time when Eric was being heavily wooed by both Obama and Clinton," Bernard says. "So I asked if I could break the golden rule and allow Eric to take a ride with Barack to an event. When Eric came out of the car, he told me he was going to absolutely endorse Barack. He was very excited."

Although endorsements by local politicians have very little effect on what voters do, they are believed to add heft to a campaign, helping with fund-raising — and with gaining endorsements from other politicians. Garcetti, utterly unknown outside Los Angeles, was an important endorsement to land simply because many elected officials in Los Angeles, at that point, were heading to Clinton's camp.

Bernard and Gifford, along with other Los Angeles staffers, were also pushing the campaign honchos in Chicago to send the candidate to speak at the influential and politically oriented First African Methodist Episcopal Church in South Los Angeles, which styles itself a leader in endorsing black candidates. "We thought it was important for Barack to do a political event when he was here for fund-raising," says Bernard. Usually money men like Bernard think only about the big-buck event, but the First AME speech turned into a major happening by earning national press and introduced Obama, the skilled orator, to a national audience.

They knew they had Obama's ear after that. So when an invitation came from the Human Rights Campaign, asking Obama to appear at a nationally televised political forum dedicated solely to gay issues, Bernard and Gifford pushed for the senator's attendance. Obama was the first candidate to accept the invite. It was no big deal — and a far cry from how such a request would have been received by the presidential campaigns in the United States just four short years ago.

"The people in Chicago trust us," says Bernard, "because we've performed and haven't steered them wrong. When we suggested a gay fund-raising event after the forum, they thought it was a great idea."

Six months later, Bernard was sitting with Obama in his black SUV, a Secret Service agent at the wheel, going over gay issues — the issues that mattered to Bernard the most — with a rising presidential candidate.

"It really hit me, as I was sitting there, how far I had come in politics since working with David Mixner [an openly gay political operative who was based in Los Angeles during the 1970s] and Clinton, and how far the gay movement had come in all of those years," says Bernard.

For decades, the gay vote was handled with a wink and a nod, and if a wealthy contributor was known to be queer, politicians would usually return the check as if it were from a convicted felon. "People were nervous as hell," says Mixner. "They wouldn't accept our money."

Things started to change in 1976. U.S. Senator John Tunney was running for re-election in California, and Steve Smith and his friends wanted to contribute to his campaign. "We held probably one of the first all-gay fund-raisers in Los Angeles," says Smith, who now works as the gay-and-lesbian-outreach coordinator for the Obama campaign in California. More than 400 gay men attended the private event held in Smith's Beverly Hills home, with Tunney making an appearance.

The senator, who eventually lost his re-election bid, was shocked by the size of the crowd. Years later, one of Tunney's aides walked up to Smith. "He told me that the senator thought the evening was much more important than the money raised," says Smith. "Tunney realized there was something new on the horizon."

Smith and his friends realized something too: Gays, especially the rich ones, were willing to contribute large sums of money to stake a claim in the traditional, mainstream political process. With the help of Mixner, Smith and other gay men founded the first openly gay political action committee in the nation: the Municipal Elections Committee of Los Angeles.

MECLA first focused on the Los Angeles City Council and holding "MECLA breakfasts," where candidates were vetted by the committee's members. If everything was kosher, the politician would receive a sizable check. Within a couple of years, MECLA was contributing to local, state and national campaigns and fighting off antigay ballot measures like the Briggs Initiative, which promised to fire gay public school teachers and their allies.

MECLA eventually dissolved, only to be replaced by Access Now for Gay and Lesbian Equality (ANGLE) in 1989. David Mixner, current West Hollywood Mayor John Duran and other community leaders made up the board. Two years later, Governor Bill Clinton asked Mixner to join his presidential campaign's kitchen cabinet and tap into gay money in Southern California. Mixner enthusiastically jumped aboard.

Around that time, Mixner met Jeremy Bernard, who was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas, where his parents were active in liberal politics. Bernard's father, Herschel, raised money for Robert and Ted Kennedy's presidential campaigns, and Mixner knew him. Mixner was a regular at Trumps — an upscale restaurant in West Hollywood. Bernard remembers it well. "I was a waiter." He and Mixner "talked often about politics and things, and one day he asked me if I knew Bill Clinton. I said my parents knew him and they thought he was kind of a jerk. Then David told me he was a part of Clinton's kitchen cabinet, and I thought, 'Shit, I just blew that one.' But he asked me to work for him anyway."

By the time Bill Clinton was elected president, Mixner and Bernard had raised $4 million in gay money. "It was an enormous sum back then," Mixner says. The gays had helped Clinton get elected, but then came a succession of disappointments with the new president's about-face on lifting the gay ban in the military and the creation of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in 1993. Clinton also signed the Defense of Marriage Act in 1996 during his re-election campaign. DOMA's language defined a spouse as someone of the opposite sex and prevented states from recognizing the legality of gay marriages or civil unions performed in other states.

Despite the sour feelings among gays toward Clinton, Bernard had been on the inside, and had learned something incredibly valuable — how the political elite operated. "David always said that the way to get power, politically, and the way to get people to see you, is to raise money," Bernard says. "If you raise money, people will come because they want your money, and they will talk to you and they will listen. It is not that they will ignore what issues are out there, but they're not going to hear it, time and time again, unless you're in front of them. And the fact of the matter is, politicians spend most of their time raising money. It's a sad state of our process.

"Before I started with [Mixner], I had no idea how that worked. And he really showed me how to put passion and money together. For me, it's not asking people for money for a new car or something. You're asking for a better country. It may sound corny, but it's true. He really showed me how the system worked, right or wrong — mostly wrong."

Mixner eventually broke off his relationship with Clinton, and this year raises money for John Edwards. Bernard became active with ANGLE and the Victory Fund, which contributes money to openly gay candidates across the country — whether Democrat or Republican. He also landed a job as political adviser to Marc Nathanson, founder and former chairman and chief executive officer of Falcon Holding Group Inc., a cable TV operator. Working for Nathanson, Bernard made his contacts with a lot of very rich folks on the Westside of L.A. During John Kerry's presidential campaign in 2004, Bernard met Rufus Gifford.

Gifford, from Manchester, Massachusetts, had just quit his job at Davis Entertainment, where he developed and produced family comedies such as Garfield and Daddy Day Care, finding it "wildly unfulfilling." Always a political junkie, he used family connections to find work in the Kerry campaign, where his soft-spoken, easy way with people made him an effective fund-raiser. That job opened doors at other campaigns after Kerry lost the general election to George W. Bush. Within a matter of two years, staffers for Clinton and Obama were calling. After they accepted the Obama offer, Bernard and Gifford formed a consulting firm, B + G Associates. And no one told them to be discreet about their sexual orientation.

"Jeremy and Rufus are two of the best political fund-raisers in the country," says David Mixner. "It's going to make them extremely powerful."

At the Paradise Cantina in Las Vegas, volunteers and staffers are not celebrating. For the second primary in a row, their candidate has lost to Hillary Clinton. (Little do they know that one week later, Obama will win a landslide victory over Clinton in South Carolina and nail down two major endorsements, from President John F. Kennedy's daughter, Caroline, and brother, U.S. Senator Ted Kennedy, changing the momentum of the presidential campaign.)

Jeremy Bernard and Rufus Gifford look around the Mexican-themed bar.

"Well, I guess it's time to move on to the next one," Bernard says to no one.

A few hours later, as the guys walk around the Excalibur Casino, e-mails start coming into Gifford's iPhone. Chicago is deploying every available hand to South Carolina. The senator from Illinois needs a win.

"Are we going too?" Bernard asks.

"I don't think so," Gifford says.

Bernard and Gifford would go if called, but they have another high-dollar event to organize in Los Angeles. With a need to drench California with costly television ads, it appears the campaign brass want them to focus on raising money. They plan on targeting young Hollywood types and rich gays for the big haul.

"We've surpassed every fund-raising goal we've made for ourselves in the past," Gifford says, "so we won't stop now."

These days, Bernard and Gifford have realized the race has become very personal. "Usually you like to keep some distance in case your candidate loses," says Gifford, "but this one has been different."

They started to feel a true fondness for the candidate back in August, when he appeared at a gay forum televised on the LOGO cable network. After the show, Bernard and Gifford organized a gay fund-raiser at Area, a nightclub on La Cienega Boulevard. In just a few hours, they raised more than $100,000 from 400 gays and lesbians, and Obama gave a speech that some saw as exceptional.

"It was truly phenomenal," says Gifford. "He equated all social injustices with the injustices gays and lesbians have to face."

Just before Obama vanished into his motorcade that warm evening last summer, he draped his arms around Bernard and Gifford and asked them if he did them right. Bernard looked at him, "Senator, you always do us right. This time, you did us proud."

Gifford, the urban sophisticate, started to choke up. Not only did he realize he was finally doing something that would matter, but he seemed to be getting results. On that August night, he thought, possibly the next president of the United States was standing there for all to see, literally embracing him and his lover.

Improv comedy night

We went to an open mic night with our couple friends at one of the local comedy clubs. I jokingly told one of them that B would be getting on stage and doing his routine and he believed me. I figured he would know better than to believe that so I never saying anything else about it.

He in turn went around and told everyone else so when we go to the show last night they were all expecting B to get up there. To their disappointment he didn't.

But he could have, there were about 20 people who got up there and did their act but only about 5 of them were actually funny. There was a little bit of everything from a guy making fun of fat people and after nobody laughed he said "I guess everyone here has a fat mother. Let's move ton to retarded people". It was interesting...most of us were laughing because it was so bad it was funny.

There was even a guy who got up there with a piece of paper and read his jokes while his hand was shacking badly.

It was bad. Very bad!

No more open mic night at the comedy club.
