California Gay Marriage Ban Overturned

The California Supreme Court overturned the ban on gay marriage and there is already a petition out there to amend the state Constitution to ban gay marriage.

How do you feel about it? How would you vote if this was up for a vote in your state or country?

I think gay couples should be allowed to marry. Live and let live, you know?

What I don't understand is the distinction between 'marriage' and 'civil unions.' Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like they're virtually the same thing from a legal aspect.

For some reason heterosexuals tend to have problems with the term 'marriage' being applied to gay unions. I don't understand it. If marriage is such a solemn and sanctified affair, why do half of couples end of divorced?

Is the distinction of 'marriage' as oppossed to 'civil union' that important to the gay community? If laws were passed allowing civil unions would that be sufficient? Or would you need the 'marriage' label to be truly satisfied?
